At The Paintbrush, we are passionate about creating a fun and inspiring space for young ARTists. Get to know the talented individuals who bring our creative community to life!

Melanie Ann Apel Owner & Director

Melanie Apel is the Owner and Director of The Paintbrush. A proud graduate of Bradley University, where she earned a Bachelor of ARTs Degree in Theatre ARTs (Magna Cum Laude), Melanie later pursued a second degree in Respiratory Care from National-Louis University. A lifelong Lincoln Park native, she worked as a pediatric respiratory therapist at Children’s Memorial Hospital for six years before turning her focus to creative pursuits.

Melanie’s Creative Journey & Community Impact

As a freelance writer, Melanie has penned children's books and popular pictorial histories, including Lincoln Park: Chicago and Lincoln Park Revisited. A single mom to two creative boys, Melanie was heavily involved in her sons’ school PTA, where she served as a VP and chaired several committees, and was also on the board of the band association, all while balancing her work and personal life.

Melanie’s Passion for Creativity & Leadership

With her background in both creative writing and organizational leadership, Melanie brings a wealth of experience and passion to The Paintbrush. When she’s not in the studio or volunteering, you can find her directing plays or taking dance classes. Melanie’s love for watching children explore their world fuels her work every day at The Paintbrush.

Meet the Team

Emma Hartmann joined The Paintbrush in 2021, bringing her years of experience in painting, drawing, and 3D art. She graduated from Truman State University in 2019, where she honed her craft and developed a deep appreciation for creative expression. Emma’s passion for art and her warm teaching style make her a perfect fit for our studio, where she helps students explore their artistic potential.

With a lifelong dream of teaching art to kids, Addison Johnson joined the team at The Paintbrush in Spring 2023. Addison studied art in college and brings her enthusiasm and excitement to every class she teaches. Her energy and passion for nurturing creativity in children make her a wonderful addition to our team, and she’s dedicated to helping every young artist feel inspired and supported.

Hayden Apel has been a part of The Paintbrush since he was just four years old. Growing up in his mom’s studio, Hayden became a core member of the pARTy Team, assisting with camps, ART in the Park, off-site events, and even co-creating Kids’ Night Out. His enthusiasm for art and natural ability to connect with kids make him an invaluable part of our team, and we are lucky to have him share his creative spirit with us.
